Israel hits Beirut’s suburbs in retaliatory attack against Hezbollah

Israeli airstrikes struck Beirut’s southern suburbs on Sunday, marking the first attack on the Lebanese capital since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire was renewed last week.

Israel said the strikes were retaliation for a Hezbollah drone attack on Israeli forces, which Hezbollah later confirmed.

Analysts described the incident as the latest escalation in a ceasefire that has been repeatedly violated by both sides since late 2024.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed continued military action against Hezbollah, while U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly criticized Israel’s ongoing operations in Lebanon during a recent phone call with Netanyahu, NPR has reported.

Lebanese health authorities say thousands of people have been killed or wounded in Israeli strikes since March, highlighting the growing humanitarian toll of the conflict.
