Powerful earthquake hits Philippines, triggering tsunami alerts across Asia

A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the Philippines on Monday, causing severe damage to buildings and triggering tsunami warnings across parts of Asia.

The quake was followed by numerous aftershocks, with reports of collapsed structures, including a three-story restaurant building in General Santos City.

Philippine authorities activated emergency response measures, closed schools in affected areas, and ordered evacuations to higher ground due to the tsunami threat.

Tsunami alerts were also issued for parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, and several Pacific islands, with waves of up to 3 meters possible in some locations, Al-Jazeera has reported.

Casualty numbers have not yet been confirmed, and officials continue to assess the extent of the damage.
