Spain: PM’s wife must face corruption trial, judge rules

Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has been ordered to stand trial on corruption-related charges, according to a Madrid court ruling.

She is accused of using her position to influence business contracts and faces charges including corruption, embezzlement, and influence peddling, all of which she denies.

A judge has imposed strict conditions, including surrendering her passport, prohibiting travel abroad, and requiring regular court check-ins.

The case originated from a complaint by a legal pressure group and centers on her role at an academic program at Madrid’s Complutense University, the DW has reported.

The ruling adds to broader political pressure on Pedro Sánchez’s government, which is also facing multiple unrelated corruption investigations involving senior officials and allies.
