Severe storms in Kentucky and Tennessee triggered record-breaking rainfall, causing flash floods that killed at least five people and left dozens missing or unaccounted for.
Kentucky was hardest hit, with multiple deaths reported, including victims trapped in flooded basements and a weather-related car crash, while another fatality occurred in Tennessee when a mother died after saving her child from rising waters.
Gov. Andy Beshear declared a statewide emergency as more than 60 water rescues were carried out and entire communities faced widespread damage.
Roads and bridges were washed out, forcing officials to warn residents to avoid travel as search and rescue operations continued, the USA Today has reported.
Authorities are now assessing damage and preparing requests for federal aid to support recovery efforts.
