California authorities uncovered at least 117 dog remains during a search of Miranda’s Rescue in Fortuna as part of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.
Many of the bodies showed signs of decomposition and possible gunshot wounds, with forensic experts also recovering hundreds of bones and dog collars from the property.
Investigators said earlier reports of missing animals and alleged abuse led to multiple search warrants and excavations of suspected burial sites.
No charges have been filed yet, and officials say the investigation is still in its early stages and will take significant time, NBC News has reported.
The rescue’s founder has denied wrongdoing in prior statements, saying some animals had to be euthanized in specific situations.
