Serbia’s protesters press on even after Vucic promises to step aside

Thousands of protesters filled the streets of Kraljevo, Serbia, continuing demonstrations against President Aleksandar Vučić despite his announcement that he would step down and open the way for early elections.

Vučić, who has dominated Serbian politics for over a decade, did not give a clear timeline for his resignation or the vote, fueling suspicion that he may retain power through other political roles.

The protests were sparked by anger over a 2024 railway station collapse that killed 16 people, which demonstrators blame on corruption and poor governance.

Vučić has denied wrongdoing and accused protesters of being foreign-backed, while also predicting his party will win future elections decisively, Al-Jazeera has reported.

The unrest has become Serbia’s largest protest movement in years, with reports of mass arrests and accusations of heavy-handed policing.
