House and Senate Republicans from agricultural states criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef.
Nebraska senators Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts warned that increased foreign imports could hurt American cattle producers and make it harder to rebuild the domestic herd.
Trump defended the decision, saying the imports would be sold at 25% below current market prices and help lower beef costs for consumers.
Other Republicans, including Sen. Tim Sheehy, Rep. Ashley Hinson and Sen. Chuck Grassley, also argued that the policy could harm ranchers despite the goal of reducing grocery prices, NBC News has reported.
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association joined the criticism, saying below-market imports could undermine long-term efforts to expand the U.S. cattle herd and support American producers.
