Latvia prime minister resigns days after ‘stray’ drone incursion

Latvia’s centre-right Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has resigned after her coalition lost its parliamentary majority when the left-leaning Progressives Party withdrew support.

Her decision came shortly after Defence Minister Andris Sprūds resigned amid criticism of the government’s response to suspected Ukrainian drones entering Latvian airspace.

Siliņa said the drone incidents exposed failures in ensuring national air security and undermined public trust in the defence leadership.

The resignation comes ahead of Latvia’s general elections scheduled for October, and President Edgars Rinkēvičs will consult parties to form a new government, Al-Jazeera has reported.

Ukraine’s foreign minister offered assistance, saying the drone incidents were linked to Russian electronic warfare affecting Ukrainian drones.
