Colorado elections clerk Tina Peters released from prison after sentence commuted

Former Colorado clerk Tina Peters was released from prison after Governor Jared Polis commuted her sentence following pressure from President Donald Trump.

Peters had served less than a quarter of her nine-year sentence for crimes tied to breaching election system security after the 2020 election.

She was convicted for helping an outside expert access and copy voting system data, actions that fueled false claims of election fraud.

Although an appeals court upheld her conviction, it ordered resentencing, saying the original judge improperly considered her public statements about election fraud, The Guardian has reported.

The commutation drew criticism from Colorado officials, with some arguing it undermined the state’s justice system.
