Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited his ancestral village in western Ireland, where he met distant relatives and celebrated his Irish heritage.
During the trip, he attended mass, visited family graves, and planted a tree in the village where his grandparents were born before emigrating to Canada in 1925.
Carney said he was surprised to discover more extended family connections than he expected.
Alongside the personal visit, he emphasized the need for stronger cooperation between Canada, Ireland, and Europe in response to what he described as a global geopolitical “rupture,” Reuters has reported.https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canadian-prime-minister-carney-visits-grandparents-irish-village-eve-g7-2026-06-14/
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin also supported closer EU–Canada ties, calling for deeper collaboration between the partners.
