UK considers forcing social media firms to prioritise trusted news

Britain is considering new rules that would require social media platforms to make content from trusted news organizations easier to find.

The proposal would apply to platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok, and could prioritize public service broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4.

The government says the measure is aimed at combating misinformation and improving access to reliable news, particularly during emergencies.

The plan follows a recent announcement banning most social media use for children under 16, Reuters has reported.

Social media companies are expected to scrutinize the proposal, arguing it could limit user choice and affect other content creators.
