Indiana residents endure 11th day without power after storms topple power lines

Thousands of residents in northwest Indiana remained without electricity Saturday, nearly 11 days after severe storms caused widespread damage across the region.

NIPSCO reported that more than 33,000 customers were still without power, with some residents in Gary warned that electricity may not be restored until Tuesday.

The prolonged outages have caused major disruptions, including spoiled food, closed businesses, limited access to gas and difficulty charging phones, while residents have criticized NIPSCO’s response.

Residents have also filed a proposed class-action lawsuit accusing the utility of failing to properly maintain trees near power lines, allegations NIPSCO strongly denies, The Guardian has reported.

The storms brought powerful winds, flooding and tornadoes across several states, and Indiana officials are seeking additional federal assistance to help communities recover from the widespread damage.
