Mars orbiter watches mysterious wave of darkness spread across red planet’s surface

A new image from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express mission shows rapid-looking changes across Mars’s Utopia Planitia region.

The scene reveals a stark contrast between light rust-colored sands and darker areas linked to ancient volcanic materials, with comparisons to 1976 NASA images suggesting the dark regions have spread.

Scientists believe strong Martian winds are shifting surface dust or exposing older volcanic rock, creating the appearance of fast-changing terrain.

The image also shows signs of buried water ice and impact craters surrounded by debris from past collisions, the Scientific American has reported.

Mars Express, launched in 2003, continues to provide key insights into the planet’s changing surface and geological history.
