Israeli soldiers punished over vandalism of Jesus statue in Lebanon

Two Israeli soldiers will receive 30 days of military detention and be removed from combat duty after one smashed a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon and another photographed it.

The IDF said their actions violated its values, while six other soldiers present will face separate consequences.

The incident sparked widespread condemnation, including from Israeli leaders and international figures, after images circulated online.

The military expressed regret and said the damaged statue has since been replaced in coordination with the local community, the BBC has reported.

The event comes amid ongoing tensions and conflict between Israel and Hezbollah despite a recent ceasefire.
