Colorado governor commutes Trump ally Tina Peters’ prison sentence

Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced he is commuting the sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who was convicted for allowing unauthorized access to voting equipment after the 2020 election.

Peters had been sentenced to over eight years in prison, but Polis reduced it to about four years and said she will be eligible for parole in June.

The decision, which does not erase her conviction, drew strong criticism from several Colorado Democrats who argued it undermines election integrity, while supporters said the sentence was unusually harsh for a first-time nonviolent offender.

The case followed allegations that Peters participated in a scheme involving unauthorized access to voting machines, which fueled false claims about election fraud, CBS News has reported.

Former President Donald Trump had repeatedly called for her release, and Peters has since apologized, saying she made mistakes and learned from the experience.
