Russia pounds Kyiv in powerful drone and missile attack

Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv early Sunday, causing fires, widespread damage, and hours of explosions across the city.

Ukrainian officials said at least two people were killed and 77 injured, with damage reported in every district and several cultural sites affected, including the destruction of the Chernobyl museum.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia used 600 drones and 90 missiles, including an Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile, though most drones and over half the missiles were intercepted.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said intelligence had warned of the strikes and confirmed an Oreshnik missile hit Bila Tserkva, marking the third reported use of the weapon in the war, NPR has reported.

Russia said the attack was retaliation for a recent drone strike in occupied eastern Ukraine that Moscow blamed on Kyiv, while peace negotiations remain stalled.
