Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to intensify strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, saying Israel would continue and escalate its campaign despite a recent ceasefire extension.
Soon after his statement, Israeli forces launched attacks on Hezbollah-related sites in the Bekaa Valley and other areas.
The escalation reportedly triggered people to flee Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, while Lebanon was marking Liberation Day.
Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed and injured civilians, damaged homes and community facilities, and reportedly included the use of incendiary phosphorus munitions that caused fires, Al-Jazeera has reported.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry says more than 3,100 people have been killed since open conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began in March.
