Three solar flares erupted from the Sun within a 24-hour period this week and are expected to combine as they move toward Earth, scientists said.
The flares, including a powerful X1.0-class eruption, could trigger a geomagnetic storm that may disrupt satellites, communications, and power systems.
Forecasters say there is a high chance the storm will be “strong” or “severe,” though its exact impact remains uncertain.
The event could also increase the visibility of the northern lights across parts of the United States as the solar activity interacts with Earth’s atmosphere, CBS News has reported.
Scientists note that similar storms in the past have produced auroras unusually far south.
