Philippine Senator Ronald dela Rosa, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court over his alleged role in former President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly war on drugs, reportedly escaped from the heavily guarded Senate building after hiding there for days to avoid arrest.
The situation escalated after supporters gathered outside the Senate and gunfire broke out between Senate security and government investigators, though no clear details about the shooting or his escape have been released.
Dela Rosa, a former national police chief, is accused by the ICC of authorizing and encouraging drug war killings that left thousands dead, mostly among poor Filipinos.
Current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. denied ordering his arrest and questioned whether the chaos was meant to destabilize the government amid an intensifying political feud with the Duterte family, The Guardian has reported.
The controversy comes as Vice President Sara Duterte, Duterte’s daughter, faces an impeachment trial that could end her future presidential ambitions.
