Powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake strikes off northern Japan

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off Japan’s northeastern coast near Iwate on Thursday morning, but authorities said there was no tsunami threat.

The quake was felt across the region and mildly in Tokyo, occurring in an area that has experienced several recent earthquakes.

No injuries, deaths, or significant damage were immediately reported, and nuclear facilities showed no abnormalities.

Some train services were temporarily suspended for safety inspections, while officials monitored the situation and warned of possible aftershocks, the AP has reported.

Japan’s government activated emergency response measures as a precaution and urged residents to remain alert.
