U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks abruptly resigned, adding to a wave of leadership turnover in immigration agencies under President Donald Trump’s administration.
No official reason was given, though reports suggest internal disagreements and shifting power dynamics among top immigration officials, including allies of former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
His departure comes as other senior officials, including acting ICE leadership, also step down or are replaced amid ongoing enforcement changes.
Banks, who previously served as a “border czar” in Texas before returning to federal service, oversaw a period of aggressive immigration enforcement and expanded border operations, Reuters has reported.
The administration says border security improved during his tenure, but his exit highlights continued instability in immigration leadership during a politically sensitive period.
